People struggle to consciously or voluntarily manage their thoughts and behavior to remain positive on a more regular basis. Before knowing how to be positive, there are two important clarifications about this topic: (a) we cannot be positive all the time, and neither should we have such expectations and (b) positivity is like a “skill” that needs to be developed until it becomes a habit.
In order to make it into a habit, we must find ways that help us adapt to situations in a manner that we move towards what we want, as opposed to reminiscing about what could/should/would happen.

In our programs, we try to help employees imbibe some of the following things that they could practically learn to do on a daily basis. So here’s our pick of 9 awesome habits to stay positive in life.
Check Your Expectations!
Someone once said, “there are two ways to be happy: improve your reality or lower your expectations.” Most often, the cause of our negativity is connected to the expectations we build – with people and with ourselves. So how to not have expectations? This is covered in greater detail here.
Check The Questions You’re Asking Yourself
What do you think of yourself when something unpleasant happens? “What will happen now? Why did this happen to me? I should have… If only I had… Why didn’t they…”
These are all natural responses, but don’t work too well! Rephrase this to: “What can I learn from this? What can I do to make this better? What would I like to do going forward?”
(Of course, this may not strike you right away when you’re emotionally disturbed… in which case, you can take some time and ask yourself the above.)
Cultivate A Positive Environment
The environment you stay in and the people with who you spend your time with have a direct impact on your attitude as well as the way you think about things. So try and choose to:
Spend more time with people who lift you up and less time with people who bring you down by being negative or critical.
Let in the information that supports you. Spend less time on negative and self-esteem damaging media sources and spend more time reading constructive blogs, books or anything that sets a positive mood.
Even though it’s clichéd, it works. No matter how small the thing or gesture is, be grateful for it and express your gratitude. Spend 60 seconds or a few minutes every day to reflect back on your day and boost the positive energy. Ask yourself questions like
What can I be grateful for in my life today?
Who are 3 people that I can be grateful to have in my life and why?
What are 3 things I can be grateful for about myself?
Pay Attention To The Basics
Optimism isn’t just about thinking in a different way. It is also caring about your physical being. Exercising regularly releases adrenaline in your body which help to diminish all the stress running through your body. Eating healthy food and getting enough quality sleep each night also attributes to a positive mindset.
Start Your Day In An Optimistic Way
The way you start your morning will set the tone for your day. So try to free those negative thoughts and set up a small morning routine that will help you to stay optimistic. Read a few positive thoughts or information, exercise, and have a good breakfast.
Use Positive Words To Describe Your Life
The words that we choose to use have a lot more power than we think. How you talk about your life is how your life will be. If you describe your life as boring, mundane and chaotic, that is how you will perceive it which will also affect your body and mind. Instead, try to use positive words and think about the brighter side which will help you find the enjoyment in the way you shape your life.
The most common mistake that people make when making a shift in their attitude is that they think they need to be perfect all the time and do things perfectly. This traps them from being positive. Don’t set inhuman standards of achieving your goal because you will find it hard to live up to that which will result in you giving up. Instead, take one step at a time and try to improve gradually.
Don’t Give Up
It is always the darkest before the dawn. So don’t give up your hope when you’re going through a rough patch. Hold your head high, go through it and come out with a lesson learned. This will help you to stay positive in a long run. By taking action rather than giving up, something good will happen.
